Camping Blaarmeersen

Camping near Medieval Castles in Ghent, Belgium

When we planned to drive into Belgium, we decided early on we would not camp in Brussels for the following reasons;

  1. we were right in the middle of summer and the traffic in the city was horrible
  2. we’ve been to Brussels before, it’s a small city and wanted to explore the surrounding cities this time.

So we drove from Breda, Netherlands straight through Antwerp to stay at a campsite called Blaarmeersen in the city of Ghent.

The campsite was easy to find and just outside of the city center. Check in was easy and quick, and our pitch was located in a private cul-de-sac, with another 10 RV’s, surrounded by large bushes so everyone had a lot of privacy.

The kids enjoyed this campsite since the other RV’s in our section had a lot of kids who would wake up early and play soccer right in front of our RV. The toilets and showers were clean and just a few steps away from our pitch. There is a small market on-site if you needed anything and a snack shop serving frites (french fries) and ice cream for those late night cravings. The washing machine and dryer was 4 euros each and worked well.

The bus stop, a few minutes walk from the campsite was the easiest way to get to the city center. You could buy tickets for the bus at the reception or on the bus for 10 euro. There are loads of maps, bus schedules and information at reception for exploring Ghent. The on-site restaurant has free WIFI, but it wasn’t so strong. You could purchase an hour’s use for 10 euro which was the most expensive so we decided not to purchase it.

We were thankful we had bikes, since the campsite/park is very big and connected to a large lake/sandy beach area with a huge water-slide that the kids visited daily. There were large walking paths and bike paths with many playgrounds the kids could explore as well. It was a fantastic site and not far at all by bike to the city centre which we rode to daily to explore (15 minutes by bike, 1 hour walk).

We stayed at the Blaarmeersen for 5 nights and planned to park somewhere near Brussels to spend the 2 nights. My husband decided to ask the reception if they would give us a better rate for 2 days if we only “parked” our RV for 2 nights just to visit Brussels. They ended up giving us half-off the rate and we left our RV in the pitch and headed to Brussesl for 2 nights. It was great, we knew our RV would be safe.

Blaarmeersen is a wonderful campsite to stay at while visiting Ghent and the surrounding areas near Brussels if you plan to camp and RV. Wonderful campsite…wonderful city!
