Oahu Eats: Rainbow Drive-In

If you love food, and love trying local cuisine during your travels, then a meal at Rainbow Drive-In is a must!

It’s one place you just cannot miss eating at when on Oahu. The kid-foodies love eating here for breakfast like in their Kid Foodie Fridays video below, or before heading to the beach.

Rainbow Drive-In

Opened in 1961, they are one of Oahu’s oldest drive-ins, serving up some of the best and most affordable plate lunches.

Rainbow Drive-InThe owners, a husband & wife-duo, Seiju Ifuku and Ayako, opened up the drive-in with the intention to

serve plates with generous portions of hearty, simple food, with two scoops of rice and a side of macaroni salad at a reasonable price. (Rainbow Drive-In – history)

Back in the day, their chili & rice plates cost 50 cents, their BBQ plates a dollar, and their hamburgers sold for a mere 25 cents! Today, they are still one of the most affordable places in Honolulu where you can get an authentic Hawaiian-style plate lunch.

Their menu is diverse, serving up some of the popular plate lunch choices – the kid foodies always love ordering a Loco Moco plate, or a plate of Hamburger steak with gravy. The plate lunch comes with two scoops of rice and a scoop of either macaroni salad or slaw. The amount of (delicious) gravy served on top of the meat can be too much for some, so to be safe, be sure to ask for it on the side.

A quick 10-minute walk from Waikiki beach, we highly recommend stopping by Rainbow Drive-In for plate lunches that are delicious, cheap, and an authentic taste of Hawaii.
