The Sushi Merry-Go-Round

As I pulled up to the local 7-Eleven both of them made unusual sounds from the backseat and asked in synchronicity if they could go to Kuru Kuru sushi, the “Merry Go Round Sushi Place” (yes, that’s what they call it).

Kuru Kuru is a small conveyor-belt sushi joint located in Aiea. Extremely busy at lunch time and dinner and more so on the weekends. But at 3pm, after swim lessons on a Tuesday, completely empty. So, we headed there for our afternoon snack!

As we approach the parking lot, the chanting began;

TUNA!

TUNA!

TUNA!

There’s something about Japanese food and conveyor belts that make my kids go crazy. They love the dining experience more than anything else. Watching them select what they want to eat and try new things at the same time makes the experience even more enjoyable for me.

They love tuna, anything with tuna they will choose. I always have to monitor to make sure it’s not spicy.

This time Jaf chose a dish he “thought” was pudding. It’s called “chawan mushi”, a type of hot egg custard with crabstick & chicken, but not sweet. Lou Lou did not fancy it at all, but Jaf loved it. They both have very different tastes, Jaf did not like the soft shell crab, while Lou Lou ate the whole roll by herself.

I often read negative things about serving raw fish to children on the internet. Yet, children in Japan have been eating raw-fish for thousands of years and Japan is known for having the longest life expectancy in the world, so their diets can’t be all that bad?! I also grew up eating raw fish on a regular basis and 44 years later, I’m fine.

I don’t feed my children sushi on a regular basis; 1) because it’s expensive and 2) because we consider sushi a treat. If you’re concerned about feeding your children raw-fish, but want to take them for the fun dining experience, choose the vegetarian sushi (cucumber rolls) or cooked items (karage chicken) from the belt or order off the menu. Conveyor-belt sushi joints are quite popular worldwide, some are family friendly (no alcohol served).
