Fighting Childhood Hunger One Bake Sale At a Time

In the United States 16 million kids struggle with hunger.

Shocked?

We were too! In fact, childhood hunger in the US is a problem that threatens not only our children but the future generation of leaders, innovators and problem-solvers. When kids get the food they need, they do better in and out of the classroom – plain and simple.

Lou Lou and Jaf have been blessed with the opportunity to eat and dine at restaurants all over the world. They understand the value of having a good meal and how much food is an important part of their growth and learning. So when we asked them about having a bake sale to raise money to end childhood hunger in our own state, they were all in.

Together, with their friends they held their first Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry this past weekend. Partnering with Honolulu’s most influential event organizers Street Grindz they hosted their bake sale at the islands newest marketplace Makers & Tasters. With the assistance of Fairycakes, Hawaii’s 1st mobile cakery, they were able to surpass their funding raising goal.

Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry is a national fundraising initiative that encourages people all over the country to host bake sales to end child hunger in their communities. Funds raised through Bake Sale for No Kid Hungry support Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign to end childhood hunger in America. Nationally, the campaign provides leadership, raises awareness and advocates for change that will make sure no kid in America ever goes hungry. Locally, Share Our Strength funds the most effective anti-hunger organizations and builds partnerships that bring together public officials, nonprofits, community groups, private funders and businesses to end childhood hunger in a particular state or city.

In our own city in Hawaii 1 in 5 kids struggle with hunger at our public schools and only 42% of kids who qualify for free/reduced lunch are also getting school breakfast. Three out of 4 teachers say they have children in their classrooms who regularly come to school hungry. No Kid Hungry makes sure children start the day with a nutritious breakfast, and end the day with an affordable meal by teaching families skills to shop and cook on a budget. When we all work together, we can connect kids to healthy foods and end childhood hunger in America. The No Kid Hungry initiative is working with schools around the country to change that, by making breakfast a part of the school day.
